Yes! That is true! With ice and snow and everything!
Our always reliable source informed us about this last week. The Thai government wants to impress the ASEAN community at the opening in 2015 and hopes to attract many ASEAN tourist to Bangkok and Thailand. And of course this will also affect the overall tourism in Bangkok from oversea tourists.
FACTS ABOUT THE SKIDOME:
Height: 110 meters. Diameter: 700 meters, Indoor ski area: 64.000 sq.m., Pistes: 3,500 meters, Max capacity: 3000 guests , Lifts: 6.
Skidome Bangkok is developed with environmental issues in mind. Cooling of the dome requires large amounts of energy, which the dome obtains from two sources of sustainable energy: ground heating and solar cells.
As well as being close to the city and river , Skidome Bangkok is surrounded by a large natural resort. This is an invaluable source of energy, because it can be used to produce ground heating.
Also the ski dome has an advantage, when it comes to solar cells, in that the sun shines every single day during the high season so the ski dome will be able to save energy for the low season where the sun shines less.
The pistes in Skidome Bangkok are developed in association with the French ski resort, Alpe d’Huez, and all pistes are copied to resemble the most popular slopes in the area.
The architects and Alpe d’Huez have a strong bond that goes back many years which makes them the perfect partner to make sure the skiing in the dome is as similar to the real thing as possible.
Skidome bangkok wants to provide the Thais and tourists with the best skiing possible. And that’s why Skidome Bangkok is the most innovative ski dome ever designed, enabling spectacular indoor skiing. Skiers on every level will be able to enjoy Skidome Bangkok.
The bottom arch provides two blue pistes for beginners, while the middle arch holds two red pistes, being perfect for more experienced skiers. And last but not least, the top arch is the equivalent of two black pistes, challenging the most experienced of skiers.
The slopes in Skidome Bangkok are developed in association with Alpe d’Huez ski resort in France, and the gradients are copied directly from the most popular pistes. This makes the skiing experience in the dome as authentic as possible.
Also, in order to ensure variation in the landscape over time, it is possible to transform the pistes, providing visitors a different experience each time they visit the ski dome.
All skiers know it: downhill is fun, while uphill is a drag. On that premises, Skidome Bangkok has made sure to facilitate top class transportation, in all of the Skidome. Every piste has its own chair lift and the three arches are combined, by an elevator with plenty of room for both skiers and their gear.
The snow provided in Skidome Bangkok is made, almost in the same manner, as the artificial snow used at ski resorts in the Alps.
Clean water, without added chemicals, runs within a specially designed cooler, through a pipe system, out into the snow cannons, which are attached to the ceiling, throughout the dome. From here the cooled water is blown through the nozzles, into the freezing cold domes, where it crystalizes and transforms into snow.
During the making of the snow, the temperature in the arches are reduced from -1°C to -8°C, where after the temperature automatically rises to the standard temperature of the dome at -1°C. The result. Real snow – just as you know it from the Alps.
